How to spin a poll

A Siena College Poll was conducted February 19-23, 2023, among 744 New York State registered voters. The conclusion, reflected in a relevant headline, is this:

“Voters Strongly Support 4 Hochul Budget Proposals; 2 Get Strong Bipartisan Support; 2 Opposed.”

Here is the data:

Focusing on the last line of the table with the headline “Poll: Proposal to ban natural gas appliances unpopular,” WBEN accurately reported 39% of voters polled support the proposal to essentially prohibit all fossil fuel-burning equipment – including stoves – for new single-family homes by the end of 2025 and for all new construction by the end of 2028.

On March 6, Rep. Langworthy posted the WBEN article with this heading:

“SHOCKER: Democrats’ energy policies are out of touch with the mainstream who say hands off our gas stoves.”

Rep. Langworthy’s spin suggests the Siena poll addressed “Democrats’ energy policies, suggests that other views are a “mainstream,” and supplies his own conclusion “hands off our gas stoves.”

Stoves were not addressed separately from other gas appliances in the Siena Poll or the WBEN article he cited. Shame on Rep. Langworthy for trying to fool us.

You imply that langworthy is capable of shame. That may be a faulty premise. ________________________________
