Congress should consider electing Mike Pence as Speaker of the House. The Speaker need not be a member. Electing Pence, a Republican, would be consistent with a Republican majority. Pence has experience in the House–he was a member from 2001 to 2013. Pence, reputed to be principled, could receive support from Democrats. A Speaker elected with bipartisan support would serve the people better than Kevin McCarthy or another partisan zealot.

I wouldn’t have a problem with that.

An earnest and thoughtful recommendation that I believe would go nowhere with the Republicans, William. Apart from that, I am not willing to forgive Pence for apparently not expressing his concern to Trump about all those dreadful Trump events over four years–and for being in the meetings pre-January 6th and not informing those who could have stopped it. In addition, he wrote a book about his version of events but claimed the January 6th Committee had no right to question him. I don’t find his ethics impressive at all.

If Kevin McCarthy doesn’t have a majority on the first ballot, he will have to offer concessions to his opponents until he does. He will try to satisfy his opponents without offending his supporters or weakening his powers. If he fails to find a way to a majority, Republicans might have to look for a compromise candidate. If they were unable to find a candidate among their members, they might turn to a former official–Paul Ryan, Newt Gingrich, Eric Cantor, or Pence.
