Vaccine hesitancy by State

On July 3, The New York Times published a graphic showing vaccine hesitancy by state.

Percent fully vaccinated (July 2022)

The Federal Reserve seeks to limit inflation to two percent. Five percent unemployment is considered normal and acceptable. To defeat Covid, we need to have fewer than 10 percent unvaccinated in every state. Suppose that vaccination rates correlate strongly with political belief, then 33 states having 30 percent still unvaccinated suggests an astonishing degree of antigovernment sentiment.

  1. Gary Perry says:

We were told by our elected officials the Covid vaccine would prevent a person from contracting and spreading Covid. … It did not.

We were again told by the same people that a 2nd vaccine would prevent a person from contracting and spreading Covid….. It did not.

We were then told by the same people that the vaccines would prevent people from dying if the contracted Covid. …. It did not.
THe numbers do point that fewer people were dying but is this due to the vaccines or could it be due to faster and improved medical care and treatment and amedicines and possibly a weakening virus ?

We We then once again told by the same people we needed a booster vaccine to prevent people from contracting and spreading Covid….. it did not.

Next a 2nd Covid booster was recommended.

My younger brother recently contracted Covid after getting sick for two days after vaccine #2, sick for two days after his first booster and sick for three days after his doctor advised 2nd booster shot.

He has been sick, and I assume contagious, for the past 9 days from Covid.

I hope the pharmaceutical companies that took billions of taxpayer funds given to them by the federal government are working on an improved and more effective vaccine.

    Gary,
I am very sorry that your brother has gotten ill. I hope he enjoys a quick recovery, and I hope that you and your family stay well.

Your letter could probably have been written by many Americans. Our government (Trump AND Biden) administrations, both, failed miserable to educate the public.

Your letter illustrates the fact that Covid can not be defeated by vaccines alone. Here’s why—viruses (and Covid, in all of its manifestations is only a virus) have one and ONLY one goal…to reproduce. Successful reproductions will continue to reproduce. It will mutate as needed.

In Covid’s quest for reproduction, a number of variants have been spawned: B.1.1.529, BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2, BA.3, BA.4 and lately BA.5. Vaccines developed to combat B.1 may or may not be effective in protecting against subsequent mutations. Which is what probably happened to your brother. More variants are certain, and each will be fast moving.

Our vaccines are historically BEST GUESS estimates of how to fight the particular virus. Each annual flu shot is concocted as a BEST GUESS estimate. Sometimes the medicos hit the bullseye. More often they come close. Sometimes they miss entirely. This is typical of fighting viruses.

What does this mean to us going forward?

Well, the virus is transmitted as an aerosol. Which means that the best defense is avoiding risky environments such as small spaces with lots of people. If one can’t avoid such environments, the next best defense is a suitable mask. Vaccines are also useful, as they do provide protections against developing a fatal illness. So Avoid crowded spaces-Mask up if you can’t-keep up with vaccines.

We need to remember that the assertions of some of our esteemed leaders have been proven wrong:
Jan. 22, 2020–“We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”
Jan. 24, 2020–Trump praises China’s handling of the coronavirus: “China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!”
Feb. 2, 2020–“We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”
Feb. 10, 2020–“Looks like by April, you know in theory when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away.”

Lastly, Covid 19 will probably never go away. The 1918 flu is still circulating and a vaccine against it is contained in the annual flu shot. We’ve learned to live with it.

Life will never go back to what it was before Covid 19. We need to learn to live with it.
