How easy it is to make people believe a lie, and how hard it is to undo that work again!” — Mark Twain
Christian Schneider writes:
But by bringing an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump for his role in inciting the U.S. Capitol riots, Pelosi could hasten her opponents’ renewal. If she is successful in not only removing Trump from office but also barring him from ever holding elective office again, it would allow the Republican Party to shed the cement boots pulling it into the abyss.
Republicans should have removed DJT a year ago. If they had, Mike Pence might have been reelected in 2020. They muffed that chance, because Sen. McConnell wanted to keep confirming right-leaning judges. Now they have a second chance. Their alternative is to stick with Trump, the albatross around their necks.
The G.O.P. Is cleaved broadly into two factions, the Trump Team and the anti-Trump bloc.
Mitch McConnell, Liz Cheney, Ben Sasse and a few others are positioning themselves as traditional Republicans.
Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Louis Gohmert and others are fully committed to Team Trump.
McConnell, cagey coot that he is, is starting to structure his party for the post-Trump years. Cheney is looking to rise to Speaker of the House. Ben Sasse and others harbor presidential ambitions. As do Cruz and Hawley.
Lindsey Graham, Tom Reed and others are trying to thread a needle. How well that is working for them can be seen by Graham’s walk through an airport with Trumpers harassing his every step. Reed’s Facebook has some truly vile comments from Trumpers calling him anything from a Traitor to a Sell-Out.
What stands out to me is the utter lack of information permeating the Trump / non-Trump debate. It’s obvious that people need to learn something about the way the US Government operates. They could also do with some instruction as to how to separate the wheat from the chaff when watching the news.
That said, the lies that Trump and his enablers (many in the Republican Party) spread about the election have been easily and readily swallowed whole by these low-information citizens and have poisoned the system. People from all age groups and all occupations and classes now truly believe the election was stolen by the Democrats. These people will propagate their opinions to their friends and progeny for many years to come, threatening our fragile Democracy.
Which of course is McConnell’s and Cheney’s problem. Having ridden the whirlwind for their own goals they have now decided to assert themselves. Otherwise, they’ll be sucked into the vortex.
There are a lot of things that can be done politically to disadvantage the Trumpers. Unfortunately, any penalties exacted will simply feed the lie that they are victims of the Deep State, and presumably breed more disaffected individuals.
Whatever happens will take years if not decades to sort. Unless, of course, the revolution comes sooner.
It will be interesting!
