What’s conservative?

  • Small, ineffective government
  • Support for autocrats: Putin, Kim, MBS
  • Ballooning budget deficits
  • Low taxes for the wealthy
  • Low taxes on inherited wealth
  • Excessive military spending
  • Any danger from climate change is negligible
  • Ignore the “Emoluments clause”
  • Judges presumed to be biased in favor of “conservative views”
  • Judges expected to put corporate interests ahead of human interests
  • Veterans homeless and hungry after their service
  • Healthcare unaffordable for many
  • Seniors with inadequate pensions
  • Attacks on public education
  • Private prisons
  • Border walls
  • Political assassinations
  • others?

If these are conservative, are they what we need and want? Really?

    We are stuck with self proclaimed conservative Reed for another 2 years.
    Nate Silver / Five Thirty Eight gives Reed a 7/8 chance of remaining in office.
    Tracy Mitrano has a 1/ 8 chance of winning.

    Reed, of course, is not a conservative in the traditional sense. He is simply a corporate hack.But his nasty, simple negative campaign ads always pay off in a low-information voter district.

    I don’t know if Tom’s ads are effective or not. He may simply enjoy approving negative advertising. His relentless visits to remote parts of his district may be more effective, but the predominance of registered Republicans in NY-23 must be the most important factor.

    “Conservative” doesn’t appear in the last mailing from Tom that came here, but “Extreme Ithaca Liberal” does in scary Halloween letters. Many of the items in my list, which aren’t conservative at all, do reflect Tom’s advertised views. Surprisingly, self-proclaimed conservatives often defend Tom only as preferable to his opponent. Labeling his opponent liberal is all he needs to do to keep them happy. Blathering about guns may help too.
