Rep. Reed continues to dismiss our military

The following article was written by Deb Meeker, a military mom, a resident of Newfield, NY (Tompkins County).

Rep. Tom Reed has accelerated his propaganda out of desperation – but disparaging an honored active service member? On Rep. Reed’s “Tom Reed” campaign page  (Jan. 13, 2016) he posted this:

“Since President Obama was elected, he pursued a reckless foreign policy regarding Iran. He agreed to the Iran Nuclear Agreement which has already been proven ineffective and he has prioritized the relationship with Iran over our longstanding relationship with Israel. The Middle East has become more and more insecure because of these actions. Last month the Iranians dangerously provoked our Navy by launching a missile in close proximity to an American ship. Last week, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Sudan severed diplomatic ties with Iran. And, yesterday Iran took ten members of the U.S. Navy hostage. I am thankful they have been released, but the bottom line is Iran is dangerous, and President Obama and his foreign policy administration continue to seek to appease the Iranian regime.

My opponent John Plumb, former national security adviser to Obama, worked in the White House with the team that created the Iran Nuclear Agreement. He has stood by the failures of Obama’s foreign policy because he helped create it, and he has criticized me when I have tried to keep American’s safe through visa restrictions. The Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and Western New York need a representative who protects their families and stands up for the men and women serving our country.”

Obama’s ‘reckless’ foreign policy?

FACT: “A ship loaded with more than 25,000 pounds of low-enriched uranium left Iran for Russia Monday as part of a deal aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear program…..International Atomic Energy Agency verifies that Iran has complied with all of the nuclear commitments included in the nuclear deal.”

“I am thankful they have been released, but …”

FACT: Sailors who were taken by Iranian authorities were released within 24 hours. “Their quick release was hailed by the Obama administration as an unintended benefit of the new diplomatic relationship with Iran established by the nuclear accord negotiated between Tehran and the United States and five other nations in July.”

“The Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and Western New York need a representative who Plumb_military-_3protects their families and stands up for the men and women serving our country.”

FACT: “(John) Plumb is a former Navy submarine officer who still serves as a commander in the Navy Reserves.” Plumb has earned military honors throughout his career.

“…he has criticized me…”

FACT: Rep. Reed fequently brags and posts about his father’s military career as though it were his own.  However, Rep. Reed has never served our country in any military capacity. Reed disparages John Plumb’s continuing service to our country, yet Reed contnues to write that he “honors our military and their families”.

A politician who sees he’s losing ground would resort to contradicting himself in the same paragraph.  Rep. Tom Reed certainly has a gift for not letting facts get in his way.

    Love it!
Not only is John Plumb running for Congress, he was born and raised here in the NY23rd.
Reed was born and raised in Joliet, IL.

I used to think that Reed was just another ALEC bought and paid for politician. But the more I see of his website and his regular dishonesty the more I realize how dangerous he really is. In the last election he avoided the issues and focused on slandering his opponent. It worked then. So, I guess he will stick with that formula. He certainly cannot run on his record.

Reed’s campaigns have been based on the idea that he is “A good old boy,” “Mr. Niceguy,” “one of us.” Remember the “Tom on the job” advertising when he pretended to be an auto mechanic, a waiter, a deliveryman? Tom can’t run on his record because many of his right-leaning supporters find it objectionable. He must and consistently has moved early to label his opponents as outsiders: Matt Zeller as a carpetbagger, Nate as a foreigner, Martha as an Ithaca Liberal. Unable to label John Plumb as a foreigner, a liberal, or a gun-grabber, Reed turns to linking John with President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Washington, D.C. Expect Tom to play dirty as he has before.

Good points.Tom Reed’s use of the term “Washington insider” as a smear against his opponent is laughable. Reed’s linking John Plumb with the names you refer to, produce a knee-jerk reaction from his base, but Reed has touted his big connections with Washington insiders – those that got him a seat on the Ways and Means committee, six months into his first term. Tom Reed is definitely a “good old boy” in Washington.

Here is another excerpt from the VoteTomReed facebook page:

President Obama is putting everything on the line to get his allies to support gun control. He has declared that he will not campaign for, support, or vote for any individual that does not support his executive action on gun control. I am a proud gun owner and a proud sportsman, but my opponent and former Obama staffer John Plumb is staying in his former boss’ good graces. Plumb has favored almost every failed policy of President Obama and, on the President’s recent unconstitutional action, he was recently quoted attacking me for standing up to the President on this issue. The President and other members of the liberal Washington elite have directed John Plumb’s actions since he moved here to run for Congress. While John Plumb works for Washington, I will continue working for you to support your Second Amendment Rights and fight for you every day in Washington.

Note the pattern: Disparage President Obama, then imply that John Plumb is complicit in every beef one may have with the President. This is a difficult attack for John Plumb to counter. It puts him on the defensive so that he has to explain, thus violating Henry Ford II’s maxim “never complain, never explain.”

Reed’s claims may be laughable, even patently false, yet be politically effective. For example, his last claim, “fight for you every day in Washington” is certainly false–Reed doesn’t spend anything near to every day in Washington.

Having read the majority of comments on Tom Reed’s two Facebook pages, I suggest the main groups of Reed’s base are one or two issue voters. The most positive feedback he receives are on those where he disparages the President, or implies that he’ll protect our 2nd Amendment rights. On the first – many comments are merely “Impeach Obama!”, and on the latter ( which ridiculous on it’s face), most comments are on the order of “Thanks Tom, you the man!”
President Obama continues to succeed in his diplomatic efforts, and has had seven years to “Take all of our guns away”.
I read recently, that one can easily buy “likes” for their Facebook pages.
On Reed’s “Tom Reed” (campaign) page, he’s getting angry comments from his base for “not going far enough” to the right. That he is a RINO, and continues to vote “with Pelosi”.
Also, on the “Rep. Tom Reed” (official) page, Reed posts fluff, and less and less as time goes by. Why? Because the majority who respond to those posts continue to prove him either uninformed or a liar.

  9. As long as we are discussing Tom Reeds stance on the military it seem appropriate to disclose that in my private and public conversations with him he is a steadfast tyrannical bigot who will never support the freedom for all American to marry who they love, doesn’t want them serving in the military and never says the word”transgender” soldiers. His politics is an avenue for his real agenda which is to destroy freedom of and from religion through imposingly an extremist form of Christianity rejected my most mentally stable Americans. To be balanced we do need Mr Plumbs stance on LGBTQI rights. He doesn’t address it at all and if he wants the LGBTQI vote he should stop stonewalling and earn it please asks this member of the American Military Partner Association.

He should take a stand supporting our LGBTQI troops. I won’t support him until he starts taking stands on these type of issues.
