Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.–Winston S. Churchill
John Stossel chides President Obama for tweaking Obamacare on his own authority; he doesn’t mention that Congress and the courts have, perhaps wisely, done the same. He criticizes Hillary Clinton for proposing executive action to limit firearm violence should she be elected President. He attacks Donald Trump for proposing totalitarian solutions to various problems particularly regulation of immigration. He attacks Paul Ryan for engineering the passage of a budget focusing particularly on the reauthorization of the Import-Export Bank. Stossel doesn’t mention that reauthorization resulted from a discharge petition and a majority vote in favor of it in the House and Senate.
While Stossel’s arguments against what he claims to be unconstitutional government actions seem not entirely unreasonable, his conclusion that “Individual freedom, and limited government, is better” doesn’t follow from them. He presents no argument or evidence that individuals acting independently of each other would constitute a civilized society capable of providing for all and dealing with important matters affecting many.
