Attendance at Tom Reed’s 2015 Townhall Meetings

Railroad_station_at_Atlanta_Apr_11Tom neglected to publicize the March 14th meetings including the meeting in Atlanta, NY with a timely press release, but available attendance data suggest that this made little if any difference.

No data is available for other meetings, of which there were several. There is too little data to draw sweeping conclusions. However, there is no indication that attendance in Atlanta on March 14 was lower than expected. Attendance at the Owego meeting was surprisingly high. The focus of this meeting was announced as property rights; this may have boosted attendance there.

Tom Reed’s success may depend on being seen as a good guy, one of us, from here. These meetings reinforce his image of being an ordinary guy at home with his homeboys in places like Atlanta, NY.

Could we suppose that Tom Reed counts every head at these town hall meetings, every flag handed out, every unreplied to phone call, every office hour, and every ice cream cone he handed out last summer as a “constituent service”? I have yet to read, or hear of any specific (save one farmer perhaps) constituent helped in Tom Reed’s tenure. In fact, even on his Facebook pages, people have complained that they have contacted him to no avail. What have these “services” entailed? What do these town halls really accomplish for those he “serves”?
