S.178 – Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015

mcconnellS.178 – Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 should have coasted through Congress; who could oppose raising fines for human trafficking. But then the GOP slipped in a poison pill, an anti-abortion measure, and now Democrats are in open revolt. Senator McConnell threatens to bully them into compliance by threatening to hold up confirmation of Loretta Lynch as Attorney General. Lynch, a black woman, has already waited longer for confirmation than seems reasonable. In the meantime, Attorney General Holder remains in office. Republicans deny waging a war on women, but here is another battle in that war.

Tom Reed says he favors clean bills, but the GOP never tires of trickery. Democrats should not be bullied. If the GOP drags its feet on confirming Ms. Lynch, they only damage their own reputation with another act of injustice.

I found it interesting to go to the site you linked. I read parts of the bill, but what was really interesting were the discussions (?) about all the amendments. This originated as a clean bill to help kids who have been subjected to human trafficking. Something everyone could agree on. Helping victim of sex trafficking and slavery. Helping kids start a new life. Etc.
I didn’t read all the debates , but there were Senators making speeches opposing Obamacare and other senators proposing amendments to the Immigration Law te redefine citizenship! , etc. Totally unrelated to the bill.
Democrats complaining that the GOP were adding stuff that was irrelevant. Adding anti-abortion language that had nothing to do with the bill. GOPers complaining that the Dems were not cooperating. Telling the Dems that they should not be stopping bills from being passed ! (That was a good one)
No wonder these guys don’t get much done. One thing is clear. BOTH political parties need to sit down and change the rules of the Senate. It is chaotic.

I believe McConnell is as ruthlessly partisan as anyone; don’t expect anything from him but more partisan politics.

““Human trafficking survivors, overwhelmingly young women, deserve to have all reproductive health options available to them. This move by politicians is an underhanded attempt to harm women most in need,” Kate Stewart, the vice president for public affairs at Advocates for Youth, said in a statement.”
i don’t know if Republicans want to “harm women most in need” or whether they just don’t give a damn – as long as they can thwart any and all protections for all women’s rights, and in the process get their way over the President.

The hell of it is that of 100 Senators, we only vote on two. No matter how much we may disagree with Senator McConnell, we can’t attempt to vote him out.

Typical. Absolutely typical, from the get-go, to the spin. I would have declared every off topic discussion out of order.
