Impossible demands

Reid and McConnellThere are many victories in this (budget) proposal….On balance it is a victory for taxpayers–Tom Reed

Has the GOP done itself in with rightist rhetoric? A constant barrage of advertising has had an impact. Part of the GOP base and some elected officials have picked up the propaganda and now make unreasonable, often impossible, demands including:

  • Small government
  • Cut spending
  • Seal the border
  • No amnesty
  • Drill, drill, drill
  • Guns and more guns
  • Abolish the EPA
  • Deport the undocumented
  • Balance the budget
  • End crony capitalism
  • Repeal Obamacare

Can the Republican leadership take responsible action in the face of orchestrated opposition from those who have been sold on the above and many more unreasonable ideas? It may be possible if moderate Republicans–including Tom Reed- cooperate with moderate Democrats as has happened from time to time in the recent past. The likely alternative is chaos, anarchy, deadlock.

If comments on his official political Facebook page are any indication, some of those that voted Tom Reed into office have buyer’s remorse. He’ll continue to talk the partisan line in all the right places, but it will be very interesting to see how he votes. Fortunately for Reed, the Republican agenda appears to be Tea Party enough to keep his more “moderate” followers appeased.

The GOP invited them in (The TP wackos). Now they have to pay the price.

Yes, indeed. Senior Republicans may wish they had never used the word amnesty. Now, when it is in their interest to do something responsible about immigration reform, the consequences of their own rabble rousing make it difficult at best.

We are all going to have to “pay the price”.
