Reasons people give for liking Tom Reed

reed serving coffeee I certainly think bipartisanship ought to consist of Democrats coming to the Republican point of view. … If we [win the House, Senate, and White House], bipartisanship means they have to come our way, and if we’re successful in getting the numbers, we’ll work towards that.–Richard Mourdock

Reasons people give for liking Tom Reed–you can’t make this stuff up.

  • Tom introduced 82 bills. (that went nowhere)
  • The House passed many bills never considered in the Senate. (bad ones, doomed from the start)
  • Tom missed slightly less than the average number of votes.
  • It is good to see what Tom IS doing. (visiting a hospital for a photo op)
  • He’s helped put the brakes on much of the Leftist agenda. (whatever that is)
  • Democrats have their pictures taken too.
  • People say Tom has done nothing because they don’t like what he has done. (whatever that may be)
  • ACA was bipartisan legislation. (so bipartisan must be the wrong approach)
  • Tom may be a moderate, but he is more conservative than Martha.
  • Tom can’t be bought for only $25,000.
  • Democrats seek and accept political contributions too.
  • Workers and unions support Martha, so if Tom gets $620,000 from realty interests that’s only fair.
  • Conservatives are happy with Tom (but they called his ideological twin, Rep. Hanna, who had a primary opponent, a RINO)

Tom has a lovely sister (so Tom must be lovely too)
Tom lost weight (he puts what’s important first)
Tom is often photographed with little kids ( he wants what’s best for them like cutting their SNAP benefits – they need to lose weight too)
Tom wants to cut waste from the government! ( those slackers on unemployment should get jobs)
Tom wants all of us to have well paying jobs ( in the energy industry)
Tom doesn’t need science and math to decide ( so, I don’t need to understand it either)
If Tom can go from being poor to rich, so can I (he must be doing something right)
Tom listens to us! (if we agree with him)

There does seem to be a certain subset of the population hereabouts who think of him as a RINO (hence the existence of the “Primary Tom Reed” facebook group). But I find it telling that, when defending him, people can’t point to his record of achievement. Because there is none. Instead, we hear…well, the things we hear both on his page and on the NY 23rd’s own facebook page (not to mention the barrage that is sure to ensue on here). Those folks tend to reveal more about themselves than they ever do about why Tom deserves his office–the subtext goes like this: I support Tom because I’m a nativist, or a misogynist, or can’t abide anything from that party whose current White House occupant is guilty of BPWB. What I can say is true about Tom is that he certainly does not inspire his followers to be their very best selves. But it is the fact that he has done so very little, other than fatten his own bank account, while on our dime that ought to be giving people pause to reconsider what it is they do support when they support Tom Reed. He is no one’s friend, but by casting their votes for him, his supporters are their own worst enemies.

I could give similar reasons for supporting Tom, if I were a supporter:

      • He is a relatively moderate Republican. (We could do worse)
      • He is arguably no more corrupt than the average.
      • Tom missed slightly less than the average number of votes.
      • Tom has a lovely sister and a photogenic family.

hey, tell me why this blog is such a failure 🙂 and tell me why ” the old liberal ” is a flop too 🙂
there seems to be only 4 or 5 of you so why don’t you just give it up ?

Bob, we know how we are doing. On Sunday, October 19, we had 147 views by 80 visitors. So far in October we have had 2746 views by 142 visitors. Since we began we have recorded more than 40,000 views and 4,000 comments, many of them posted by you. Thank you for your continuing interest.

I’m curious what your criteria are for deeming this blog a failure? Rich may be able to tell us how many hits it’s had in its lifetime; last I knew, it was a pretty substantial number. Or maybe you’re unfamiliar with the ways of the online world….for every person who writes, thousands more lurk. (And look–how otherwise would we have all gotten to know you, Bob? For that reason alone, we must consider this a success, no?)

      • BOB McGILL says:

success would be to actually accomplish something, I knocked out a 256 piece order over the weekend, while waiting for a machine to go thru a cycle I make comments on here ( like now, there are 3 machines running ) If showing how stupid you can be is an accomplishment then you also accomplished something ! 🙂

        • Deb Meeker says:

Little boy, did you have a comment as to why you support Tom Reed? Could it be you enjoy being on the same kindergarten level as he – humor wise, and would rather insult people, like Tom does – than work?

I wonder what Tom likes about you? You and he have similarities for sure. Perhaps he likes your insistence that science doesn’t matter, or that people are just out to get what they can take from each other.. maybe it’s the nagging feeling that you’re really not good enough, but if you put on a big show – people won’t see it?
