Executive Action

obamaAs Congress is about to go on vacation, the President encouraged Americans to reach out to their elected officials and let them know that they must pass these measures (raising the minimum wage, helping people pay back their student loans,  fair pay, paid leave) when Congress returns to session. And in their absence, the President will continue to do everything he can, working with all stakeholders who are willing, to create jobs, strengthen our economy, and expand opportunity for all Americans.–President Obama’s August 1 weekly address

One President’s prerogatives are generally available to the next. Republicans who object to President Obama’s executive actions ought to take care not to encourage them. By refusing to address current problems, the GOP leaves a vacuum that in some cases executive actions can fill. Here are some examples of GOP intransigence:

  • Affordable Health Care
  • Border Crisis
  • Firearm violence
  • Immigration reform
  • Long term transportation bill
  • Minimum wage
  • Student loans
  • Unemployment insurance

boehnerIf Republican’s object to President Obama’s executive actions, they should not set the stage for further expansion of Presidential powers; powers that may be exercised by a future President Biden, Clinton, Cuomo, Warren, or one they might welcome even less.

The GOP believes, wrongly I think, that they can isolate themselves from America’s problems. Gated communities. Overseas bank accounts. Pitting the working poor against the unemployed. This has been the WCE…Worst Congress Ever…if your yardstick is attempting to help common , working class Americans. It has been a great Congress if you are a member of the 1% and want to keep your tax benefits. Obama needs to keep doing whatever he can to help working Americans. But, with the GOP in control of the House he is severely limited in what he can accomplish. That has been their game plan from day one.

It still astonishes me there are poor and poorer Republicans, who need all the President has fought for, but it appears their hatred cannot let them accept it.
What about the “Hastert Rule” which is what an executive order would be like for the GOP led House?

I want to read even more things about it!
