Rand Paul

Dr. Rand Paul attended Baylor University graduating from Duke Medical School in 1988. He completed a general surgery internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center.

Paul claims that since his election to the US Senate in 2007, he has gained a national reputation for introducing a budget that he says balances in 5 years, for opposing detention of American citizens without trial, and for his defense of property rights.

At CPAC, Paul said: “Our rights are innate, they come from our creator and no government can take them away from us. The Constitution merely codifies what exists before all time. Mr. President, we won’t let you — we will not let you run roughshod over our rights. We will challenge you in the courts. We will battle you at the ballot box. Mr. President, we will not let you shred our constitution. Our future hangs in the balance.”

What are Paul’s views?

  • Paul believes life begins at conception and that abortion takes the life of an innocent human being.
  • He disbelieves in man-made global warming. He supports coal mining in Kentucky and opposes using the EPA to enforce greenhouse emissions.
  • He supports a balanced budget.
  • Paul opposes same-sex marriage, but believes the issue should be left to the states to decide.
  • He supports cutting government spending and lowering taxes.
  • He is critical of the Federal Reserve.
  • He opposes the use of drones as weapons.
  • He opposes any firearm control measures.
  • He would rely on “real free market principles to hold health care costs down.”
  • He would not allow the government to bail out Detroit and other cities. Paul said, “I basically say he (Obama?) is bailing them out over my dead body because we don’t have any money in Washington.”
  • Paul touts the “nobility of private charity” as opposed to government-funded “transfer programs.” He suggests privatizing Meals on Wheels and other government assistance for hungry seniors. (It isn’t clear what Paul means here by privatize–Meals on Wheels is a private non-profit that relies to some extent on government funding.)
  • He believes raising the minimum wage would cause more unemployment. (This is a common, but one-sided, view among Republicans. Even if true, it ignores other possible benefits.)
  • Paul, might agree to extending employment benefits for the long-term unemployed if the costs are paid for, but believes an extension would be a disincentive to work.

Would Paul make a good President? I doubt it. He is uncompromising and knows too much that just ain’t so.
